Your Pet Ate What?

Pets get into the craziest things. What should you do when your pet manages to eat something they shouldn’t have?

Foreign Bodies

Strings and things! Cats and dogs alike like eating things they shouldn’t, and though most small objects will pass, some larger objects won't. These foreign bodies can tie up your pets’ insides, literally, or pierce them, depending on what the object is. Pets have eaten everything from hair bands to sports gear, making foreign bodies a pretty common issue.

Medicines

Get to us immediately. Don’t try to make your pet vomit, don’t try to chase them around. Grab the package and get them to us ASAP. Call ahead if you can safely and let us know you are coming, and what your pet ate. Depending on the medicine it could be fatal in moments, so fast action on everyone’s part is incredibly important.

When to Get Worried

If your pet didn’t eat medicine it shouldn’t have, and you’ve decided the object is small enough to try to wait out, when should you get worried? You're going to have to keep a close eye on your pet, and at any adjustment in attitude, play, appetite, or bathroom frequency you should bring them to see us, though we don’t recommend waiting. Waiting can turn a small problem into a larger one very quickly.

When in Doubt

If you’re not sure if your pet has eaten something, or could pass it, always feel free to give us a call and let us direct you properly. We can tell you if you can risk waiting to see if the object passes or if you should get into our office as soon as possible.

No matter what your furry friend gets into, know that we’re here for you! Give us a call if you’re ever in doubt about something your pet may have ingested, and we’ll walk you through your next steps.
